Pug Rescue Victoria is a non-profit, charitable institution, committed
to helping all pugs in need. It is run by a former veterinary nurse
who volunteers her time and bed to care for these precious pugs.
The rescue would also not be complete without the help of a handful of
wonderful foster carers. These foster carers take in our rescue pugs
and look after them as one of the family until they are placed into their
new home. We are always looking to expand our foster care program, so if
you think you would be able to foster one of our pugs on a temporary
basis, please contact us.
Our mission is to find abandoned and surrendered pugs, new permanent loving homes.
Pugs that arrive in rescue that are sick or injured are rehabilitated
before being placed in a new home.
Strictly all pugs are: vet checked, desexed, microchipped, vaccinated, wormed, de-flead and heartworm tested before leaving the rescue.
All adoptions are done through a process of application. If you are seriously considering adopting a rescue pug into your home, please click on 'application
to adopt a pug' and fill out your details. Once we have recieved your application,
we will keep you on file and when a suitable pug becomes available, we will contact
you. We do not operate on a first in, first serve basis. We try and specifically match the pug to the most suitable applicant. Every single pug that comes through the rescue
has a unique personality so therefore not every pug would suit every applicant. If you have submitted an application and it has been approved but have not been contacted by us yet,
please keep in mind that we may not have had a pug come through the rescue that suits your requirements or lifestyle.
Unfortunatley not all people who fill out an application form will be able to
adopt a pug. We are very fussy to whom our pugs go to and our main priority is
making sure our pugs are placed in the right home. For example, if you do not have
secure fencing or are not willing to have your pug as an inside dog, your
application form will not be considered. We conduct home checks before adoption to
ensure our pugs are going into a safe and loving environment.
PLEASE
NOTE: We do not do interstate adoptions, so if you are out of Victoria,
please contact your local pug rescue group.
We are always looking for donations to help pay the
veterinary bills for our rescue pugs. All donations to
Pug Rescue Victoria are tax deductible.
Pugs are not just dogs, they are little people in fur coats! Here are some very important points to consider when choosing to adopt a pug:
* Pugs are indoor dogs and do not like being outside on their own. (Installing a doggy door in a pug friendly home ensures your pug can go in and out as they please)
* Pugs can die in hot weather so it is essential that your pug is kept cool in summer.(installing an airconditioner is advisable).
* Pugs can develop respiratory problems if they are exposed to cold conditions in winter.
* Most pugs cannot swim and will drown easily(It is essential that if you have a pool, it must have pug proof fencing around it).
* Pugs shed 365 days a year, so if you dont think you could handle pug hair every-where, the pug is not for you.
* Pugs are a high maintenance breed, so be prepared for vet bills.
* Pugs do not need alot of exercise, a daily walk around the block is fine.
* Do not let your pug get overweight, an overweight pug is most likely to develop health problems and die younger.
* Pugs grunt, snore, fart, snuffle and sneeze in your face!
* Facial folds above the nose needs daily cleaning to avoid infection.
* Pugs can get eye ulcers very easily, so it is important to see a vet imediately if you think your pug may have an ulcer. Not seeking veterinary treatment straight away could cause your pug to loose an eye.
Our pugs are not free. Although we do not charge a set fee, we do ask that you cover some of the vet fees we have incurred in rescuing a pug. This fee is usually $250, but could be more or less depending on the pug. We generally spend much more than the adoption fee on veterinary expenses getting our pugs fit for adoption.
It is a sad fact, but some-times circumstances arise where some-one needs to surrender their pug. If you would like to surrender a pug, please contact the rescue and let us know of your situation. We will come and pick up the pug, at no cost to you.
